Balkan History Timeline

History teaches us that men have never learned anything from it.  --Hegel

Hegel says somewhere that all great events and personalities in world history reappear in one way or another. He forgot to add:
the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.  --Marx

To aid those who want to understand the Balkan people in the context of their troubled history, we have included a timeline from ancient times to the present.  It is by no means comprehensive, but gives a glimpse into what was going on in the Balkans and the world.  Additional historical resources are included in the Links section.

For simplicity in viewing the timeline, we have divided it into three pages:

"Staking a Claim"
(Pre-Christian Times to the 19th Century)

"To Be One Nation"
(1900-1988)

"Crucible of War"
(1989 to present)
